Boxelder Tree (Acer negundo) is one of the most adaptable trees there is

The boxelder tree (Acer negundo)is one of the most adaptable trees in the United States. While it naturally grows along lakeshores and river beds to stabilize soil, this tree survives well in any soil condition. It prefers wet to moist clay looms, but it will also survive periods of drought when needed. The only thing that this tree does not like is salt spray, so consider planting it away from streets in colder climates.

The boxelder tree can make a beautiful shade tree as it quickly grows about 50 feet tall. It can, however, be as short as 35 feet or as tall as 60. It has a round crown that is as wide as the tree is tall. This tree has a short softwood trunk. The box elder tree often serves as a home to birds because of its dense foliage.

Box Elder Tree are either male or female

Boxelder trees are either male or female, with the females producing yellow leaves in the spring that are driven by the wind to the male trees for pollination. The flowers usually appear as clusters in early spring as the tree is starting to produce its leaves. They are tiny in size, and they may be hard to notice without close observation.

Both male and female trees have three-to-seven-inch-compound leaves consisting of three to seven-tooth leaflets. The leaves are pointed at their tips before becoming round at the base, and they are one of the most distinguishing factors about this tree that is native to most of the United States. The leaves turn brown and drop in early winter. These leaves alternate on the side of branches. In the late summer or early fall, the leaves turn a vibrant yellow before dropping winged nutlets that can grow into new trees.
