Description

Iris Cristata is native to the Northeastern United States.

The Iris Cristata, also known as the dwarf crested iris or the crested iris, is a perennial plant native to the Northeastern United States. It grows well in zones 3-9. Iris Cristata prefers full sun to partial shade environments with well-draining soil. The plant even grows well in rocky environments and near bodies of water. It is also very heat tolerant and drought resistant. The Iris Cristata is considered a low-maintenance ornamental flower.

Iris Cristata only grows to be around 9 inches tall, but it is known for spreading over land quickly. It is an excellent plant for ground coverage. When planted in groups, the plants will form colonies and spread to cover an entire area. Despite continued and impressive growth, the plant is non-invasive and non-aggressive, meaning that it will not overrun the rest of the plants in your garden. When used in the garden, the Iris Cristata is excellent as a coverage plant, border plant, or even a rock garden plant. It will also grow in containers. Generally, the plant is known for growing in places where a more delicate species will not tolerate it.

Iris Cristata is a lovely addition to any garden.

Iris Cristata blooms in the spring during April, and, commonly, each bud will bloom in unison, creating a vibrant burst of spring color in your garden. Flowers are usually pale blue, white, or lavender colored with golden-crested falls and white centers. The plant appears nearly stemless when in bloom. Although relatively unseen during blooming season, the plant has distinct sword-shaped leaves. Outside of blooming season, the plant is still attractive groundcover. Iris Cristata will attract hummingbirds and bees during the blooming season. It can be propagated by division, which is excellent for expanding your garden. The Iris Cristata is a notably complex plant to find for sale.
